Give the volunteers in Upper Austria a voice!

2023-08-27 23:47:00

You can still vote for two weeks, then the winners of the honorary office prize of the OÖ Nachrichten and the Sportland Oberösterreich will be determined. So you still have until September 10th to say “Thank you!” to say, who work day after day, and year after year, for our children and youth and make sports club life in the country possible in the first place.

More than 60,000 Upper Austrians work in one of the 2,500 sports clubs in the state. They donate millions of voluntary hours to children, young people, parents and society every year. With the volunteer award, the OÖN, Tips, Life Radio and TV1, who organize this award in cooperation with the Sportland Oberösterreich, also say “Thank you!”.

You can vote for the nominated candidates in 16 regions – each regional winner receives 1000 euros. The three state winners will also receive 1000, 500 and 250 euros respectively. The winners will be chosen on September 25th.

3 questions to … Markus Achleitner

Markus Achleitner is VP state councilor for sport and economy

1. How important is volunteering for all of us?

It is a cornerstone of our society and makes an enormously important contribution to the quality of life. Standing up for others, promoting togetherness and ensuring an attractive club life takes a lot of time. I would like to thank everyone who uses their skills, talents and energy to ensure that the diverse club landscape remains colorful.

2. What do you think is the great added value of a good community?

Receiving support from many quarters is of great importance for both individual and team athletes when it comes to achieving goals. Upper Austria’s almost 2500 sports clubs ensure that this community can be lived. It’s easier to do things together. This also applies to club projects. Celebrating successes together, but also being there for each other when things don’t go according to plan – all this is possible in the strong, voluntary networks. There are so many people doing more than they have to.

3. You are also active on a voluntary basis: as chairman and drummer at the traditional music band in Neukirchen near Lambach.

The commitment in the music club is the same as that in a sports club in many areas – it has an extremely high value for society. You experience this community. But I also enjoy those moments when I’m practicing a piece of music alone at home, as well as when I decide to go on a bike ride or hike – which unfortunately rarely happens. But I like being in sports clubs.
