Southern California drivers faced a tense afternoon as a rapid double-threat of brush fires disrupted traffic and strained local emergency resources.
The York Fire and the Sudden Glendale Freeway Closure
The urban transit disruption began at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, when a small brush fire ignited near California 2 close to Round Top Drive. According to Fire Department spokesperson Jamie Stewart, the incident—designated locally as the York fire—initially measured a modest quarter-acre with manageable conditions.
To combat the threat and allow a critical water tanker direct access to the blaze, the California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down all northbound lanes of California 2 at around 5 p.m., as reported by CHP Sgt. Christian Stevens. While the total freeway shutdown lasted a mere three minutes, the logistical footprint lingered. By 6 p.m., two lanes remained restricted alongside the northbound on-ramps from York Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard.
Approximately 100 firefighters and 17 fire engines deployed to the scene. Their aggressive containment strategy successfully halted the fire’s forward progress by 6 p.m. Officials confirmed that no structures were directly threatened and, fortunately, no injuries were reported, though cleanup operations extended well into the evening.
The Gibby Fire Ignites a Major Crisis in Orange County
The Gibby fire erupted around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Ortega Highway and Gibby Road, nestled near Rancho Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Residents in the path of the smoke and flames faced shelter-in-place orders for several hours as air and ground crews mounted an intensive defense.
Relief finally arrived after sunset. By approximately 7:30 p.m., the Orange County Fire Authority officially reported that forward progress on the Gibby fire had been halted. Despite the successful containment, authorities kept key segments of Ortega Highway closed between Gateway Place and Grand Avenue to allow firefighters to clear hazards and secure the perimeter.
