Global climate strike: Greenpeace protests against fossil climate protection blockers

Environmental protection organization calls for national law prohibiting the development of further oil and gas deposits in Austria

Vienna (OTS) The global climate strike organized today by the environmental protection movement around Fridays for Future is once again setting an example for more climate protection. In the course of the protest march, Greenpeace is calling on the Austrian federal government to put an end to the robbery of new oil and gas sources by fossil companies. Because global warming is continuing unabated. Nevertheless, the greed for profit of the oil and gas companies is limitless: In Austria, too, new licenses are constantly being issued. In order to credibly pursue the goal of climate neutrality by 2040, a strong law is finally needed in this country that paves the way out of fossil dependence.

“In the midst of the climate crisis, corporations like OMV and ADX Energy continue to expand their destructive oil and gas businesses. This is incompatible with global climate protection goals, fuels global warming and, at the end of the day, destroys our planet. It is high time that the Austrian government put a stop to climate protection blockers and enshrined in law the end of new oil and gas projects,” demands Jasmin Duregger, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace Austria. To do this, the Austrian federal government must enact a law that will definitively ban the development of further fossil sources with immediate effect and will allow the current production licenses to expire by 2035. At the moment, exactly the opposite is the case: OMV wants to expand its gas business in Wittau, Lower Austria, and is already conducting test wells. The Australian company ADX Energy is also planning to search for gas in Molln, Upper Austria.
