Global Food Security Index: Oman fourth in GCC

Muscat: Oman has been ranked fourth in the Gulf in the Global Food Security Index released by the Economist Impact. The Sultanate tops the list of Gulf countries in terms of food availability, affordable food and natural resources. It ranks third in the quality and safety of the food index. Oman ranks 40th globally in the Food Security Index. Qatar is ranked 24th and number one in the GCC. Kuwait and the UAE are in second and third place respectively. Globally, Kuwait is ranked 30th, the UAE 35th, Bahrain 43rd and Saudi Arabia 44th.

Denmark and Ireland are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Global Food Affordability Index. According to the report, Oman is one of the GCC countries in the index and ranks 18th globally with 88.8 points.

The other GCC countries are Qatar (31), Kuwait (44), Bahrain (46), UAE (50) and Saudi Arabia (53). Norway and Finland top the list globally in terms of natural resource availability and other related indicators. Oman is ranked 76th globally in the GCC with 45.2 points. Globally, Saudi Arabia is ranked 84th, UAE 88th, Qatar 91st, Kuwait 93rd and Bahrain 107th.

The Economist Impact for the Global Food Security Index looked at food availability, quality, affordable food, food security and quality, and natural resources in 113 countries.
