Dubai, Vae (ots/PRNewswire) The official website for Global Youth Climate Week (the Week) is now online. It calls on global stakeholders to register their events and demonstrate their support for next generation climate action. Interested individuals and organizations can find the website at:

Global Youth Climate Week

“The 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) will be the first global stocktake since the signing of the Paris Agreement,” said Dr. WANG Binbin, Executive Secretary-General of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC). “As international society assesses the state of our… “As we look at the planet and chart a better course for the future, it is important to recognize the critical role of youth as the backbone of the net-zero future and provide them with appropriate support to take on this historic responsibility.”

The Week takes place one week before the COP and aims to contribute to global climate policy by giving the next generation the opportunity to raise their voices for climate, improve their innovative solutions and put their climate actions into action. It was first proposed by GAUC to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in February 2022 and jointly initiated eight months later by GAUC and over 100 global partners. Ms. Patricia Espinosa, former UNFCCC Executive Secretary, praised the Week as an “effective contribution to the UNFCCC process.”

With the launch of the official website for the Week, GAUC aims to make the Week even more inclusive and warmly invites all relevant stakeholders to join the effort and contribute to the momentum by attending from 20th to 24th. Organize climate-related events in November 2023 and register them on the Week website.

Bringing youth climate action to the international stage

Building on the success of GAUC youth activities in 2022, GAUC expanded its “Climate x” leadership training program by opening it to students from around the world and translating students’ climate actions into the Week.

The training program, which includes a “1+3” module to encourage students to translate their knowledge of climate change into tangible results, involved nearly 1,000 students from 74 countries and around 400 universities, 88% of whom were from the global south. Within the module, “1” refers to the online coursework delivered by academic experts and spanning a month in July; “3” symbolizes the three hybrid courses that students must complete from August to November. The students who demonstrate climate leadership skills during the training program will be selected as delegates to the GAUC COP28 Youth Delegation, the third such group brought by GAUC to the COP.

By the time the Week’s official website went live, students had already organized nearly 200 events in their communities, reaching a total of approximately 20,000 people. During Week 2023, students will organize their third series of events that will be recognized as youth-led contributions to the Week and will be showcased at COP28.

Enlisting support from diverse stakeholders for a successful COP 28

Support from diverse stakeholders is critical to preparing the next generation for a sustainable net-zero future. Leveraging the strengths of its partners, GAUC has provided various resources to support students in the training program, including more than 20 guest lectures and 5 field trips.

“We are determined and ambitious to meet the challenge of climate change,” said Alice HO, GAUC’s youth representative. “However, it is important that we, the future climate defenders, learn from those responsible today. We need your support .”

This December, GAUC will set up a GAUC Pavilion in the Blue Zone of COP28. This is the first time that GAUC has set up a dedicated pavilion for its young delegates and partners. “We welcome our partners to organize their events at the GAUC Pavilion. “I and the GAUC youth delegation look forward to working with them to harness the power of youth for a successful COP28,” said Alice.
