GM Kent Hughes’ Winning Strategy: Drafting Young Players Ready for Change

2024-03-25 16:36:10

For the past two years, GM Kent Hughes has been doing the same thing during the NHL draft, using some of his choices to get his hands on a young player established in the league but who needs a change of scenery.

It happened two years ago with Kirby Dach of the Chicago Blackhawks and last year with Alex Newhook of the Colorado Avalanche.

If Dach has already proven despite his injuries that he will reach another level with the Canadian, many wondered if Newhook would be capable of doing the same, he who had nevertheless had some chances to assert himself on the Avs’ second line.

Now that the Canadian’s regular season is coming to an end, we can better analyze the newcomer’s performance.

He whose best career season was 30 points in 82 games in Colorado, this season he compiled a record of 24 points in only 43 games, a pace of 46 points, a clear improvement.

In addition, his great speed and his ability to play both in the center and on the wing gives his head coach several options.

We can believe that when the CH adds a few impact players to the attack, Newhook will fall into his real seat, that of the third trio, but in the meantime he wants to be a positive element of the attack this season.

No doubt, the Canadiens GM seems to have once once more won his bet and we can trust him if he pulls off this trick once once more during the next draft.
