Takashi Yamazaki’s R-rated Godzilla Minus Zero
is dominating the November box office with an estimated $6 million in preview earnings, outpacing recent genre competitors and challenging Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s family release The Cat in the Hat.
The sequel builds on the momentum of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One,
which grossed nearly $114 million globally and secured a visual effects Oscar for director Takashi Yamazaki. With strong backing from IMAX and premium large formats, industry tracking places the opening weekend for Godzilla Minus Zero
between $30 million and $35 million across 3,254 North American theaters, according to Variety. Preview numbers alone reached $6 million through fan screenings tied to Godzilla Day, topping the preview tally posted last year by Disney’s Predator: Badlands.
Preview Records and Ratings for GKIDS Release
The strong start marks a preview record for U.S. distributor GKIDS, comfortably surpassing the preview gross and $13 million opening achieved by The Boy and the Heron.
It also outpaces the preview figures for the previous installment, which launched to $11.4 million. Godzilla Minus Zero
stands as the first film in the franchise’s 70-year history to receive an R rating. Reviewers note that the classification stems from intense combat sequences and blood rather than explicit profanity or nudity.

In Japan, the film achieved its earnings through its first three days. Its opening day gross set a record for a live-action picture in the territory, surpassing the opening day figures for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Critical reception remains strong with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, though slightly below the 99% rating earned by its predecessor.
Box Office Competition From Warner Bros. Animation
As the Kaiju sequel targets the top spot, Warner Bros. Animation’s The Cat in the Hat is projected to open in second place. Directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja and featuring a reported net production budget, the Dr. Seuss adaptation brought in roughly $1 million in previews that began at 2 p.m.

Cast and Production Scale in Postwar Japan
Returning to a late 1940s postwar setting, the narrative follows Kôichi, played by Ryûnosuke Kamiki, as he continues living in Tokyo alongside Noriko, portrayed by Minami Hamabe, and Akiko, played by Sae Nagatani. The ensemble also features Hidetaka Yoshioka reprising his role as engineer Noda, Min Tanaka as Professor Murakami, and Sakura Ando as a neighbor named Sumiko.
The plot introduces King Ghidorah, a three-headed extraterrestrial dragon equipped with anti-gravity beams capable of lifting entire building blocks into the air. Reviewers highlight Naoki Satô’s musical score and the visual effects work overseen by Takashi Yamazaki, noting that a single sequence featuring Godzilla rising from the ocean was constructed using water particles built by two visual effects artists.

New Additions to November Theater Lineups
Alongside the box office battle between Godzilla Minus Zero
and The Cat in the Hat,
Searchlight’s dark comedy Wild Horse Nine,
directed by Martin McDonagh and starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, is targeting a domestic launch between $4 million and $8 million. Additional weekend releases include Sony’s distribution of Ramayana: Rise of a Legend
across 1,300 theaters, Angel Studios’ “Drummer Boy,” and Fathom’s “Jimmy.”
