Golden Globes 2023 Nominations Announced – Rolling Stone

Everything Everywhere All at Once, White Lotusand Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story were among the big nominees for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, which were announced this morning, Dec. 12.

Everything Everywhere picked up six nominations, with acting nods for stars Michelle YeohJamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan, as well as directing and screenplay recognition for filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The film is also up for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, where it’ll compete against Babylon, The Banshees of Inisherin, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mysteryand Triangle of Sadness.

Meanwhile, two of 2022’s biggest shows, The White Lotus: Sicily and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, will compete against each other in most of the Limited Series television categories. Both are up for Best Television Limited Series, along with Black Bird, Pam and Tommy, and The Dropout. White Lotus stars Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, and F. Murray Abraham all picked up acting nominations, as did Evan Peters, Richard Jenkins, and Niecy Nash-Betts for Monster.

In the Motion Picture categories, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin led all nominees with eight, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Its stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan all picked up acting nods, while McDonagh earned Best Director and Screenplay nominations, too.

Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans earned five nominations, including a look for Best Motion Picture – Drama, where it will compete against Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Warehouseand Top Gun: Maverick. Spielberg is also for Best Director, as is McDonagh (Banshees), Kwan and Scheinert (Everything Everywhere), James Cameron (Avatar), and Bay Luhrmann (Elvis).

Probably the most notable film nominee, however, was Brendan Fraser, who is up for Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his turn in The Whale. Fraser has a contentious history with the Globes, claiming that in 2003, then Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, Philip Berk, groped him (Berk has denied the allegation). Fraser, who’s being heralded as an awards-season front-runner for his performance in The Whalehad previously stated that he would not attend the Golden Globes if nominated.

Over in the world of television, this year’s top nominee was ABC’s hit sitcom, Abbot Elementarywhich picked up five, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy (it’ll compete against The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Buildingand Wednesday). Star and creator Quinta Brunson picked up a Best Actress in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy nomination while supporting players Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Tyler James Williams are also up for acting prizes.

And in the TV Drama category, The Crown cleaned up with four nominations, including Best Television Series – Drama (it’ll compete against Better Call Saul, House of Dragon, Ozarkand Severance). Stars Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki, and Jonathan Pryce all picked up acting nominations as well.

The Golden Globes will return on Jan. 10, 2023, with comedian Jerrod Carmichael serving as host. Last year, the show was kept off televisionwith NBC refusing to air the Globes following an investigation into the awards’ voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

While the HFPA has faced plenty of criticism over the years, including allegations of briberyit was a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation about the HFPA’s striking lack of diversity — including the fact that it had no Black members — that prompted NBC to drop the Globes. (Tom Cruise even gave back three of his awards as part of the backlash.)
