The Government delegate in the Community of Madrid, Mercedes González, announced on Tuesday the creation of a coordination commissionwhich will hold regular meetings to monitor the arrival and reception of all those Ukrainians arriving in the region. González presided over the first meeting that was attended by the Minister for the Presidency, Justice and the Interior of the Community of Madrid, Henry Lopez; the delegate for Families, Equality and Social Welfare of the Madrid City Council, Pepe Aniorte; and the president of the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid and mayor of Arganda del Rey, William Hita, among others. After finishing said meeting, the Government delegate highlighted to the media that there had been “unity, coordination and loyalty” together to face a crisis that has “incalculable” dimensions, with Spain the fourth country with the largest community of Ukrainians within the European Union. And, of all of them, 21% reside in the Madrid region, a number that continues to rise. The City Council of the capital has already assisted 263 Ukrainian asylum seekers in the Las Caracolas center and is receiving between 14 and 20 people each night. For his part, the delegate for Families, Equality and Social Welfare specified that the profile of the displaced is, 90% single mothers with childrenfor which he asked at the meeting that the coordination not only focus on the first reception, but also put the focus on the integration of families in the medium and long term, as well as have a rest area in Atochaseason through which 25% of the Ukrainians that our country is receiving arrive.
