Ed Sheeran has been cleared in the case of plagiarism of the title “Shape of you”. As a reminder, the singer was accused of plagiarism by Sami Chokri, who claimed that the English star’s hit sounded a little too much like his title “Oh Why”, however judge Antony Zacaroli has now given his verdict in favor of Ed .
This Wednesday, the High Court in London found that the star did not “deliberately or unknowingly” copy a passage from the melody of “Oh Why” by Sami Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue for his own song.
Plaintiffs’ attorney Andrew Sutcliffe recently said the similarity between the two songs was absolutely beyond doubt and was even “striking”, going so far as to be virtually identical.
“Mr. Sheeran is undoubtedly very talented, he’s a genius. But he’s also a magpie,” he said. “He borrows ideas and throws them into his songs, sometimes he acknowledges it, sometimes he doesn’t”, he accused: it “depends on who you are and if he thinks he can do it with impunity”.
Ed Sheeran has not yet spoken publicly about this plagiarism but he can now rest easy.
