Dutch entertainer Gordon Heuckeroth, 58, has publicly walked back his long-standing promotion of Dubai as an idyllic escape, revealing in a recent interview with De Telegraaf that he was “doodongelukkig” (dead unhappy) during his residency. He confessed that his move was intended to prove his theory that the Netherlands was a pool of negativity and that happiness was easily found in the emirate, but the Arab dream ultimately proved to be a lonely existence.
For years, the singer maintained that his relocation to the emirate was a response to the negativity he experienced in the Netherlands. While he previously showcased his lifestyle—highlighting his luxury apartment, constant sunshine, and the presence of a personal butler—he now admits that the reality behind the glamour was a profound sense of isolation. Since he is now fully happy again in the Netherlands, he noted that the truth can finally be told.
The Reality of a Luxury Lifestyle
However, he discovered that changing his environment did not resolve his internal struggles. “Dan merk je ook wel dat het niet uitmaakt waar je heengaat; je neemt je problemen altijd met je mee,” he stated. He noted that during his time in Dubai, he felt unhappy with both his life and himself, weighing 123 kilograms at the time. He also admitted that he sought out the isolation himself, though he did not fully understand how the situation would unfold.
His reliance on a personal butler for companionship previously drew criticism from figures like Jeroen Pauw, who questioned the depth of a relationship where one party is on the payroll. Pauw famously sneered that the butler was merely “een heel lieve meneer die eieren bakt” (a very sweet gentleman who fries eggs). Gordon now acknowledges that the absence of his partner, Patrick, contributed significantly to his misery during his time abroad.
A Shift in Perspective
Since returning to the Netherlands, Gordon has focused on his well-being, losing 35 kilograms and reporting that his type 2 diabetes has been resolved.
- Gordon previously claimed that Dubai offered a perfect life, frequently contrasting it with the perceived negativity in the Netherlands.
- The entertainer now identifies his former state of mind as being “zwaar” (heavy) and “overal een beetje klaar mee” (finished with everything).
- He emphasizes that he is now grateful for his life in the Netherlands, describing his relationship as a source of genuine connection rather than the artificial companionship he experienced while living alone in the emirate.
