The Government of Guatemala reported that this Tuesday, April 9, “President Bernardo Arévalo has dismissed the governor of Quiché because he has ceased to be a repository of public trust.”

He added that in accordance with the law, the alternate governor, Héctor Morán, assumes the governorship of Quiché on an interim basis. The dismissed official is Mélinton Estuardo Solorzano Rivera.

A source from the Private Secretariat of the Presidency indicated that the reason for the dismissal was because “some members of the Departmental Development Council -CODEDE- reported having been summoned to give them an envelope, with Q30 thousand in each envelope to elect this person in the shortlist.”

Solorzano Rivera took office on March 21 after President Arévalo chose among the proposals presented.

On that occasion, the Government of Quiché published on its Facebook page that the “departmental governor highlighted his commitment to the department of Quiché for carrying out transparent and effective management, opening the service doors of the Departmental Government to all citizens with the support of President Bernardo Arévalo de León.”

On March 20, President Arévalo appointed five governors and on that occasion he commented that they would not be given “a blank check” rather, the functions are established by law and they must coordinate actions at the departmental level on behalf of the president.

Government retracts

After having confirmed the dismissal, the Government of Guatemala reported on social networks: “A few minutes ago a decision was reported regarding the governor of Quiché which has not been confirmed by the Presidency of the Republic“.

“The decision is being studied, waiting to analyze the complaint and its scope, and to hear the governor’s version.”
