Grammy-Nominated Singer Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75

Hundreds of fans lined the streets of Mumbles on Saturday, August 15, to bid a final farewell to Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought home to Wales, according to reporting by Billboard. The singer, globally celebrated for her 1983 chart-topping power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” died last month in a hospital in Portugal at the age of 75.

Final Journey Through Mumbles and Skewen

According to Billboard, Tyler had been hospitalized in May in Faro, Portugal—where she maintained a home—to undergo emergency intestinal surgery. Following her death in the Portuguese hospital last month, her coffin was returned to Wales draped in a Welsh flag.

Dozens of admirers gathered outside the singer’s former home, leaving floral tributes as the hearse passed through Mumbles, near the city of Swansea.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up as a coal miner’s daughter in public housing featuring an outside toilet in Skewen, Wales, located roughly 7 miles outside Swansea. She was raised alongside three sisters and two brothers.

Musical Legacy and Official Honors

Tyler earned three Grammy nods. In 2013, she represented Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in 19th place.

Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for her services to music, a recognition driven largely by “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The ballad shot to the top of the charts in Britain and the United States and has accumulated more than 1 billion streams. Her catalog of hits also includes “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” from the soundtrack of the film Footloose.

Scheduled Memorial Services

A celebration of Tyler’s life for family and friends is scheduled to take place at a church in Swansea on Monday, August 17. Following the service, the singer is set to make a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
