The performance report recently did not even begin to meet expectations. After Sunday’s 2-3 defeat in Yverdon, those responsible at the club were forced to act. Americans have been in charge at the Grasshoppers since mid-January. Los Angeles FC replaced a Chinese consortium as majority shareholder after almost four years.

Since mid-February and the home win against FC Basel, the Grasshoppers have remained winless in seven championship games and only picked up two points. In Yverdon at the weekend they scored more than one goal in a game for the first time since a 2-1 win against Basel on February 17, but still suffered a third defeat in a row and their 17th in 31 league games.

In the Super League rankings, the team is in second-to-last place two rounds before the division into the championship and relegation rounds, six points behind FC Basel. The second from last in the relegation round has to defend their place in the top league in a barrage against the second in the Challenge League.

At the turn of the year, GC was still in sight of the championship round in eighth place, four points behind sixth place. The difference is now 14 points. The reserve for bottom team Lausanne-Ouchy decreased from ten to seven points.

The Bern native, who previously worked at FC Winterthur, took up the coaching position at the Grasshoppers in the summer as the successor to Giorgio Contini with a contract valid for two years. The former striker, who now works as an assistant to national coach Murat Yakin, quit his job at the end of last season “due to a lack of strategy”.

For Berner it was a return to the club where he began his career as a professional footballer almost 27 years ago. (abu/sda)
