The Comptroller General of the Republic issued an alert to the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) due to the absence of essential equipment both in the field of Medicine and in the Resuscitation or Shock Trauma Room. This situation compromises the adequate and timely care of patients in a high-risk state, as detailed in a recent control report.

The entity’s commission indicates that the Emergency Service, in charge of providing emergency medical and surgical care, must be operational 24 hours a day, ready to attend to any emergency depending on its complexity. However, when reviewing the organization of human resources and equipment in these INEN care areas, based on technical health regulations, significant deficiencies were found.

During the evaluation, carried out from March 11 to 15, 2024, it was discovered that the Medicine topic lacks vital equipment such as a crash car, electrocardiograph, portable glucometer and manual resuscitator for adults. This lack of resources endangers the life and well-being of patients classified as priority care II and III who come in search of an emergency.

On the other hand, the Resuscitation or Shock Trauma Room, intended for people with priority injuries, also has a notable shortage of equipment. Of the 57 medical equipment that it should have, it is missing 32, which represents 61% of the total necessary for its proper functioning.

Among the missing equipment are critical tools such as the portable electrolytes and blood gas analyzer, the ICU-type electric multipurpose stretcher bed and a transport ventilator, among others. Additionally, the presence of expired medications was identified, adding another level of risk for patients requiring immediate attention.

This diagnosis highlights the urgency of adequately providing these critical areas of the INEN to guarantee the quality and timeliness of emergency medical care, especially for those patients in situations of maximum urgency. In this sense, the control commission stressed that this deficiency could seriously impact the health and safety of patients who depend on these vital services.

The Comptroller General suggested notifying these discoveries to the director of the medical center with the purpose of implementing the necessary corrective measures to guarantee adequate and timely care for patients who resort to the Emergency Medical Service.
