Greens made a bike jaunt when it came to soil protection

The government team of the Greens who traveled to the Bregenz Festival – Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler, Minister of Justice Alma Zadic and Minister of Health Johannes Rauch – got a picture of the European protected area “Auer Ried” in Lustenau by bike on Thursday. On the one hand, they were informed on the spot about the projects in the protected area, on the other hand, Kogler addressed the topic of soil protection – the core topic of the Greens’ summer campaign.

In hot summer weather, the group – the ministers were accompanied by about 30 Vorarlberg party members and officials – traveled by environmentally friendly train from Bregenz. From the Lustenau train station we continued by bike to the nearby conservation area. Vorarlberg’s Mobility Provincial Councilor Daniel Zadra, who comes from Lustenau, provided information as a kind of host and called the protected area the “Central Park” of the state. The European protected area has numerous special features, including the fact that it has been owned by the Swiss municipality of Au since 1593. It is characterized, for example, by large connected meadows and is now home to the largest lapwing breeding population in the entire Lake Constance area.

On the one hand, Kogler praised Vorarlberg for its public transport (“The S-Bahn runs there more often than the U-Bahn in some big cities”), but land use is problematic in all federal states. Areas equivalent to 16 football pitches would be “consumed” in Austria every day. However, since the federal states are responsible in this regard, attempts are now being made to achieve binding target agreements, said the Vice Chancellor.
