Manuel a about sixty tomato plants under his greenhouse for his personal consumption, that of his family and friends in Lacropte (Dordogne). This garden enthusiast harvested last week 1.2 kilo beefsteak variety tomato. In his vegetable garden, he has already picked some tomatoes, the next ones to harvest are still green, but they are already big “this one will weigh more than a kilo” shows the truck driver by profession who has refined his technique over the years.

At the end of July, he harvested a tomato weighing more than 1.2 kilos in his vegetable garden – Manuel

A short circuit, from rabbit to tomato

Manuel explains his method “I make my furrows, I put manure, nettles (only the leaves), then I plant my feet and I water”. The Lacropte gardener still has a trick of his own, he uses the manure of his twenty rabbits and his poultry which he macerates in a wheelbarrow filled with water for two or three days before spreading it on his tomato plants.

Manuel carves his feet and above all, he has his own tomato seeds, he never buys any. The Périgourdin keeps the seeds of the biggest and most beautiful tomatoes from one year to the next “I take them out, I dry them and I replant them”. He makes his plans at home at the end of January before planting them a few months later.

When asked if these large tomatoes do not lose taste? Manuel laughs, “What do you think? These are not the tomatoes you have in the supermarket. They are delicious, I eat them with a little vinaigrette or just with salt”. And it’s been going on for 18 years, 18 years since Manuel replanted his own seeds with tomatoes more and more beautiful. With this year’s heat, Manuel expects he will harvest a little less tomatoes, but he can produce in his greenhouse up to 150 kilos.
