GTA or Red Dead are unlikely to be adapted for the cinema

The video game is increasingly available in the cinema. And one would expect Rockstar not to spit on the goose that lays the golden egg, and yet…

Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption are the two biggest franchises from Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. And yet, it would seem that an adaptation of these two works is not for now. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, thus affirmed that the studios had no intention of embarking on too large film or television projects, even though the success of The Last of Us proves more than ever that it is possible to adapt video game franchises brilliantly.

The CEO of Take Two insists however: if he recognizes the qualities of The Last of Us, he recalls that most adaptations have been failures. “The reason you’ve had failures in the past is that despite tremendous efforts, the IP was mismatched. It is a very difficult business. And we’re not going to bet the future of this business on third-party fulfillment.”

For Take Two, it would be very risky to commit heavy resources to making film adaptations. The company prefers to use its resources to develop its games.
