Following the pilots’ strike at Ryanair, Guido, a resident of Dour, saw his flight to Italy canceled 15 days ago. His return flight too. It was planned for this weekend as well. In Puglia, he will therefore have to manage. But who bears the additional costs generated by these cancellations?
Guido was to have a relaxing vacation by the sea in Puglia, Italy. But his two flights were therefore canceled by Ryanair.
“It’s a lot of phone calls and hassle. Fortunately, I speak Italian well. I pity people who don’t speak it at all,” confides the Belgian tourist.
Here are the changes that Guido had to make to his trip: he was to do Charleroi-Brindisi on July 16. The resident of Dour had to leave two days earlier from Beauvais airport. A new flight at 550 euros. That’s 2 additional hotel nights at 200 euros and 2 additional days of car rental at 200 euros.
The return was supposed to be tomorrow, but Guido and his family will leave two days later from the city of Bari this time. Here again room and car rental costs are added, as well as meals.
“I tried to contact Ryanair yesterday, but could not. And today they tell me that they are not sure that my costs will be reimbursed”, Guido points out.
Who should bear these additional costs?
“European legislation does not say much. It is the costs related to the cancellation that will be incurred. Again, it is on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the airline. This means that you have to provide supporting documents. You need a motivation and demonstrate that it is directly linked to the cancellation”says Jean-Philippe Ducart, the spokesperson for Test-Achats.
So be sure to keep all your receipts for expenses. Please note that Ryanair does not accept bank card receipts or taxi receipts as proof without very precise date, origin and destination.
