The measure details that 103 cases of said syndrome have been reported during 2023, until June 23.

Peru declared this Saturday a national health emergency for 90 calendar days due to the “unusual” increase in cases of Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) in order to guarantee the supply of pharmaceutical products and reinforce surveillance and investigation of this disease.

The supreme decree was published in the Official Gazette El Peruano and the measure also includes improving patient care in health services, reinforcing the control of increased cases of GBS and the development of communication material for the prevention, preparation and management of the syndrome aimed at the population and health personnel.

Guillain-Barré syndrome can be caused by an acute bacterial or viral infection, and its symptoms include weakness and tingling in the feet and legs, which later spreads to the upper body. In extreme cases it can cause paralysis.

The measure details that the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Control of Diseases has reported during 2023, until June 23, 103 cases of said syndrome, and that the monthly average of cases was less than 20 cases per month at the national level ( lower than that registered in the years prior to the 2019 outbreak).

However, since the end of June, a slight increase in cases (16) was reported compared to the average observed in previous weeks, in which between 2 and 8 cases were recorded.

The departments that reported the highest number of cases during 2023 were Lima (26 cases), La Libertad (19), Cajamarca (11), Piura (9), Cusco (7), Junín (8) and Callao (5); and, of the 16 reported cases with a date of onset of muscle weakness in mid- and late-June, they come from Piura (4), La Libertad (3), Lima (3), Cajamarca (2), Callao (2) and Junín ( 2).

This Wednesday, the Minister of Health of Peru, César Vásquez Sánchez, requested the declaration of a health emergency in the country due to the increase in cases of this syndrome and, in this way, acquire the necessary immunoglobulin for the treatment of patients

“If the casuistry increases, there could be a lack of immunoglobulin, for which reason we have requested that in the coming days a health emergency be declared by Guillain-Barré and that the necessary vials of immunoglobulin be purchased and placed at the service of the population,” Sánchez said after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, according to the official Andina news agency.

The Ministry of Health has already decreed a national epidemiological alert, which determines that public and private health services intensify surveillance, prevention, and response actions to possible cases and their presence, thereby guaranteeing timely care.
