Straw stars, balls and chocolate figures wrapped in tin foil can be found primarily in Austria and Germany. Elsewhere, however, you can sometimes find bizarre-looking pieces of jewelry: in the USA, for example, an – not real – pickle is hidden in the Christmas tree. Whoever finds it will get a little surprise. Popcorn garlands and medal-shaped jewelry, which often contain family photos, are also popular. In Spain, the Three Wise Men hang as chocolate figures in the Christmas tree. In Denmark, the Kræmmerhus is a must. The Stanitzel, which is usually homemade, is filled with sweets, cookies and nuts.

In Ukraine, spiders or webs are a must on the Christmas tree: This goes back to a legend according to which spiders decorated a poor widow’s tree with cobwebs, and in some variants these then turned into gold.
