The mayoral election for Hachioji, Tokyo was announced on the 14th.

All are new independents, including former Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member Yasuhiko Takita (41), former Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member Morozumi Jo (61), and former Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau director, who is supported by the Constitutional Democratic Party, the Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the Hachioji Consumers’ Network. Five people have filed their candidacy: Kazuo Shiyake (59), endorsed by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, office worker Takayuki Hattori (40), and temporary worker Takayuki Matata (58).

In the election to decide the leader of the largest city in the Tokyo-Tama region, home to approximately 570,000 people, each candidate is appealing for policies aimed at better city development.

Voting will be counted on the 21st.

Mayor Takashi Ishimori (66), who is in his third term, announced in September last year that he would retire at the end of this term.

Mr. Hatsujuku, who was nominated by Mayor Ishimori as his successor, calls for the succession and development of Ishimori’s government, advocating the realization of “sampo yoshi” of “good people, good living, and good community.”

Mr. Takita and Mr. Ryozumi are both former members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Council. Takita advocates a shift from the “old-fashioned political system” to “city government in which citizens play the leading role,” and the enhancement of child-rearing support measures. Drawing on her experience as a member of the metropolitan assembly and city council, Ms. Ryozumi advocated the establishment of a “Basic Ordinance for Carers” to support caregivers.

Hattori is advocating for urban development that utilizes startup companies and digital transformation (DX).

As of the 13th, the number of people registered on the electoral roll is 473,989.
