Hamilton fails to make it through first qualifying period

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton failed to pass the first qualifying period for the Saudi Grand Prix, the Formula One World Championship, on Saturday.
The British driver was satisfied with 16th place as his Mercedes team struggled after drastic changes to the regulations this season.

Hamilton was 1.4 seconds short of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz’s fastest time and 0.7 seconds behind his German teammate George Russell.

“I’m sorry,” Hamilton told his team via the call center upon learning of his position.

It is the first time the 37-year-old has failed to pass the first period of testing since the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2017.
