Handball EM: Hendrik Wagner replaced against Sweden with breathing problems – “I couldn’t breathe anymore”

The backcourt player of the second division club Eulen Ludwigshafen traveled to Bratislava last Sunday to replace Julius Kühn, but had to go into isolation immediately because of a positive PCR test.

On the match day of the clash with the Swedes, the Handball Association then reported that Gislason could fall back on Wagner for the third main round game. The backcourt player had completed two negative PCR tests and had been “detailedly examined internally and cardiologically”, as the DHB communicated.

But against Sweden, the consequences of the infection quickly became noticeable in the 24-year-old right-hander. “After three attacks he couldn’t breathe anymore,” Gislason explained after the game on “ARD”.

Just a few minutes after being substituted on, he had to leave the field again. He had previously scored a goal, but had also been noticed with a misthrow and some lack of concentration.

“He was in no condition to play”

“After three or four minutes he noticed the virus,” Gislason admitted. The Icelander assured himself during the warm-up that Wagner felt “top fit”.

But “it’s something else on the field when you have to run back and forth for three minutes with full commitment,” explained the 62-year-old DHB coach and stated: “He wasn’t in the condition to play.”

For the last game of the European Championship against Russia on Tuesday (6:00 p.m. in the live ticker), Gislason will not use any other quarantine returnees. “Due to the experience now with Hendrik, it’s nonsense and makes no sense,” said the Icelander on “ARD”.
