“Where do I start? It was a night I’ll never forget,” Harry Kane shared after becoming the first English player to claim the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 25 years.
Fresh off a historic victory, the Bayern Munich striker flew back to Germany on Tuesday to a club eager to celebrate its milestone. The award marks the first time a Bayern player has lifted the trophy in 45 years, placing Kane alongside German legends Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who last won it in 1981. While Robert Lewandowski, then at Bayern, was the great favorite for the award in 2020, the decision was made not to award the trophy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is Kane who finally brings the honor back to Bavaria.
A Special Welcome and an Immediate Return to Domestic Duties
Assistant coach Aaron Danks confirmed that Kane arrived back in Munich on Tuesday to train with the squad. The club is organizing a special pre-match recognition ahead of their upcoming second-round German Cup fixture against second-division side Magdeburg. Danks noted that the England captain is available to play on Wednesday as Bayern looks to defend a domestic trophy won last season largely thanks to Kane’s hat trick in the final.
Uli Hoeneß on Harry Kane: "Today I’d buy him for 150 million. Because he’s a dream for Bayern Munich. A global figurehead. A good character, a role model for our youth, our 18-year-olds. He puts his arm around them. He tells them how they need to strike the ball." [via @goal] pic.twitter.com/YuzpjDXtc0
Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, praised the forward’s impact both on and off the pitch. Freund noted that the club is thrilled with Kane’s elite performances, highlighting his rare blend of world-class talent and humility. Freund added that Kane has redefined the center-forward position and serves as a vital inspiration for younger players coming through the ranks.
Balancing Unbridled Joy With Somber Realities
The jubilation in Munich arrives during a complicated stretch for the club. Manager Vincent Kompany is currently undergoing medical treatment following a sudden collapse during a training session last week, while midfielder Joshua Kimmich remains on personal leave following a death in his family.
“You see the extremes that life can offer,” Danks observed regarding the juxtaposition of the club’s fortunes. “The immense joy that Harry lived yesterday and the moments that we’ve had in the last few weeks. It is important to realize that what matters most is people.”
Lamine Yamal Sets His Sights on the Future
Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal collected the award for best young talent for the third year during Monday’s ceremony. Finishing third in the overall voting behind Kane and Kylian Mbappé, the 19-year-old winger made it clear that his ambitions extend much higher.

“It will arrive, good things take time, I trust the path I am building,” Yamal wrote in a social media statement on Tuesday night. He added that he approaches his career without haste and with the quiet confidence that his moment will eventually come.
