Heat wave with record temperatures in ten cities 2024-05-13 03:25:43

In the Mexican capital, at an altitude of 2,240 meters, the maximum temperature reached 34.3 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous month’s record. In neighboring Puebla, the mercury reached 35.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, smashing the record of 34.3 degrees set in 1947.

In Ciudad Victoria, in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, near the US border with Texas, the maximum temperature on Thursday reached 47.4 degrees Celsius, breaking a record held since 1998.

In the state of San Luis Potosi (center), authorities closed schools due to the unbearable heat, after the mercury approached 50 degrees Celsius.

The heat wave last week caused long-hour power outages in several regions of Mexico, especially in the northern part of the country.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose term ends in October, has assured citizens of the adequacy of the electricity grid, characterizing the power outages that have occurred in the past period as isolated incidents.

In a report published Thursday, Mexico’s health ministry announced seven deaths related to the heat wave from March 17 to May 4, a toll expected to rise due to unusually high temperatures in recent days.
