Heat-Weary South China Now On Flood Alert Amid Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rains raise flood fears in southwest China. It has been raining heavily since Sunday in southwestern China including Sichuan. The Ministry of Environment has announced that the rain will continue till Tuesday. Disaster management forces are evacuating people from flood-prone areas to safer places.
Emergency measures are being taken to prevent floods in Sichuan.

A state of emergency was declared here in the first week of August due to severe drought. On August 7, China’s temperature rose to its highest level in 60 years. Many towns recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.

The authorities had ordered to reduce the production of the hydroelectric plant and to control the use of electricity in most of the towns. Factories in Sichuan were also ordered to close for six days to conserve energy. The Yangtze river basin dried up, crops dried up and agricultural fields were torn apart, creating a severe crisis.
