Here lies an overlooked career path

This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.

Spring has brought the news that only 20 percent of young people have applied for vocational training, which is on par with previous years, but far from the target of 30 percent.

At the same time, there are 43,000 young people who neither attend an education nor have a job. Many young people also feel vulnerable and lack something to do that creates meaning for them.

As a representative of one of the most underrated trades and career paths, namely cleaning and the service professions in general, I would like to invite both the young readers and their parents on a journey over coffee and tell them that a career in service is much more than a mop , broom and bucket.

Here lies an overlooked path to meaning, value and human life.

When it comes to cleaning, we ensure a safe and infection-free workplace for Danes across the country, both adults and children, as we clean everything from workplaces, hospitals, schools and companies.

We save lives in operating rooms, where a team of cleaning technicians knows how to clean a room in 17 minutes, so that the surgeons can quickly save the next life.

We create security in psychiatry, where cleaning people with heartache also helps patients in their need for routines, everyday life and familiar faces.

We geek out with robots and planning the work with IT, data and technology, so that we can clean large areas at, for example, workplaces in a shorter time and at all times of the day.

Now, as a young person, it may be difficult to see yourself forever on a psychiatric ward or in the corridors of a company. How can it create enough meaning for an entire working life?

Yes, in our industry you can develop, even without a long education first.

We are good at spotting our talents throughout our working life and training them. It also means that as a young person you don’t have to worry about making the wrong choice, because it’s never too late to change direction. In fact, we find half of our talented managers internally, and our specialists are allowed to work with administrative tasks, customer contact, sustainability, IT and much more.

I hope that our journey together here can inspire a young person who doubts how to find meaning in an adult life. Because the future in the service industry has arrived, and it is full of possibilities.
