Hezbollah’s Tunnels in Lebanon: A Threat to Israel and Regional Stability

The Israeli newspaper “Globes” published a new report in which it talked about Hezbollah’s tunnels in Lebanon, noting that these tunnels are very dangerous and almost impossible to destroy.

The newspaper recalled a report published by the French magazine “Liberation” two days ago, which said that Hezbollah’s tunnels are larger, deeper and more important than those of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“Globes” indicated that the French magazine’s report raised concerns in Israel, especially since it explained how any military operation in Lebanon would be completely different from the Second Lebanon War in 2006, due to the presence of an extensive underground infrastructure owned by “Hezbollah.”

In its report, which was translated by “Lebanon 24”, the newspaper discussed the nature of the tunnel system established by “Hezbollah”, and said that estimates indicate that the length of the party’s tunnels is hundreds of kilometers, to the point that they reach Syria.

The report indicated that the construction of the tunnels in Lebanon was carried out with financial assistance from Iran and with expertise from North Korea that was used, and added: “The depth of the tunnels reaches 80 kilometers, and given the geological characteristics of southern Lebanon, Hezbollah was able to advance the extent of the tunnels by 15 meters per month.” This is in the midst of working with different intensities.”

For its part, the “Alma” Research Institute in Israel says that “Hezbollah has focused since 2006 on developing a network of tunnels that connect, along dozens of kilometers, the Beirut region and the Bekaa in southern Lebanon.” However, Globes says that these tunnels are equipped with short-range Fateh 110 missiles made in Iran, and they also contain ballistic missiles.

Months ago, the ALMA Institute talked about Hezbollah’s “explosive tunnels”, as these places could collapse on whoever enters them or could cause landslides.

In turn, Dr. Nathaniel Palmer, a senior lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Bar-Ilan University, told the Globes newspaper: “Hezbollah’s tunnels help to survive and withstand, and are also an essential means of staying away from Israeli intelligence,” and he adds: “Even if… Israel is inside Lebanon, so it is very difficult for it to reach those tunnels, and if it wants to enter and fight in those places, the price will be very high.”

The report also points out that Israel has been aware for many years of the actual development of the tunnels, even if it was not aware of their scope, and adds: “In December 2018, the Israeli army launched Operation Northern Shield, which lasted for 41 days, during which 6 attack tunnels for Hezbollah were identified.” God, but it is impossible that these tunnels are the only ones that penetrate the border fence towards the Israeli interior.

What is the difference between the Gaza Strip tunnels and the Lebanon tunnels?

The Globes website quotes Israeli researcher Amihai Mittleman as saying that there are clear differences between Gaza’s tunnels and those in Lebanon. He says: “Gaza’s tunnels are often made of gravel, while in southern Lebanon the tunnels are mainly made of solid rock, especially in the mountainous areas.” “.

During Operation Northern Shield, which began in 2018, the Israeli army poured thousands of cubic meters of concrete into Hezbollah tunnels. According to Globes, this method is completely different from that used in Gaza, where tunnels are blown up using air force bombs, explosives, or water pumping, knowing that each step taken depends on the depth of the tunnel and its structure.

According to Mittelman, in the presence of strong rocks such as those found in southern Lebanon, there is no reasonable amount of explosive materials that could blow up the tunnels. He adds: “Concrete buildings have cost a lot of money in order to block Hezbollah’s tunnels. If the goal is to break the effectiveness of Party tunnels, it is better to close them.”

What is the extent of Iranian and North Korean interference?

The “Globes” report also talks about the extent of Iranian financial interference in the construction of Hezbollah’s tunnels, also recalling what the “ALMA” Institute published about the arrival of experts from North Korea to Lebanon, and their contribution to strengthening Hezbollah’s tunnel network.

The ALMA Institute also indicated that the combination of Iranian and North Korean weapons was evident when the fortification work was carried out by a North Korean company under the supervision of an Iranian officer from the Revolutionary Guard.

Also, Globes says the North Koreans are experienced at maintaining underground means. While Hezbollah appears to be storing ballistic missiles underground, the North Koreans are placing a nuclear arsenal there.
