High Electric Car Adoption Rates in Germany: Survey Finds Majority Open to Electric Mobility

A Statista Q survey commissioned by Eon shows that six out of ten drivers in Germany can imagine driving an electric car. Younger people (72 percent) and families (73 percent) are particularly open to electric mobility. At 80 percent, approval is also very high among owners of solar systems. “The possibility of using their own solar power for charging makes the switch particularly attractive for them,” says Jens Michael Peters, who is responsible for energy solutions at Eon.

According to those surveyed, climate protection and sustainability speak in favor of an electric car. Charging at home was the second most common reason given for purchasing an electric car. Additional reasons given include purchase premiums and tax benefits, as well as more relaxed driving thanks to less noise and vibration.

Regardless of the vehicle currently used, 71 percent of the drivers surveyed see the switch to electric drives as necessary in view of climate change. 78 percent think that switching to battery technology is a way to improve air quality in cities. Younger people and parents in particular (82 percent each) and residents of large cities with over 500,000 inhabitants (84 percent) share this view.

Respondents see the importance of classic petrol and diesel engines dwindling: while 64 percent still consider it one of the three most frequently used modes of transport, only 37 percent expect that this will still be the case in ten years. Electric and hybrid cars as well as e-bikes would then play a greater role in everyday life. (awm)
