High-flyer VfB Stuttgart Dominates Bundesliga with Hat Trick from Serhou Guirassy

Four months after surviving relegation, VfB Stuttgart is at the top of the German Bundesliga, at least for one day. High-flyer Serhou Guirassy scored a hat trick for the Swabians to win 3-1 (0-1) against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday. Second is Borussia Dortmund, one point behind. Dortmund beat Union Berlin 4-2 (1-2) in a turbulent game without ÖFB team player Marcel Sabitzer, who is still injured.

It was a setback for RB Leipzig, who couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw against relegation candidate VfL Bochum after two missed penalties. Hoffenheim moved past Werder Bremen into fourth place with a 3-2 win. ÖFB man Romano Schmid’s first goal of the season did nothing to change Werder’s third defeat in the last four games. The previous leaders Bayer Leverkusen and series champions Bayern Munich are only in action on Sunday at home against bottom-placed Cologne and Freiburg respectively.

In Dortmund’s home duel with the struggling Union, the focus was on the video assistant in the first half. One goal from each team was disallowed due to a very slight offside position. For the Berliners, where ÖFB legionnaire Christopher Trimmel started, Robin Gosens (9th) and veteran Leonardo Bonucci scored from the penalty spot (30th). The Dortmund goals were scored by Niclas Füllkrug (7th), Nico Schlotterbeck with a remarkable long-range shot (49th), Juliuan Brandt from a goal (53rd) and the former Union kicker Ryerson (71st).

Sabitzer did not train with the team all week due to his adductor muscle injury, but instead completed a rehabilitation program. A use on Friday in the European Championship qualifier hit in Vienna against Belgium seems extremely questionable. It is not yet clear whether the 29-year-old will even travel to the ÖFB team on Monday. According to Dortmund information, the midfielder will start team training in the next few days.

Michael Gregoritsch still injured

It is also unclear whether Michael Gregoritsch will have enough to play against the Belgians. The Freiburg striker, Austria’s best scorer in the ongoing qualifying with four goals, is still suffering from calf problems. He is therefore likely to miss the hit against Bayern on Sunday (5.30 p.m.). At Leipzig, Xaver Schlager and Christoph Baumgartner were in the starting lineup against Bochum, while Nicolas Seiwald was on the substitutes’ bench. The penalties were awarded by Xavi Simmons (27th) and Emil Forsberg (61st).

Stuttgart turned the game around against Wolfsburg after the break with three goals from Guirassy (67th/penalty, 78th, 81st). The 27-year-old team striker from Guinea leads the league’s shooting list after seven rounds with a formidable 13 goals. ÖFB team player Patrick Wimmer didn’t even get a short stint with Wolfsburg.

Three points for newly promoted Darmstadt 98

Schmid made it 1-1 for Werder with a deflected shot (17th). A Bremen attack was rewarded with another equalizer in stoppage time (91′), but Marius Bülter gave Hoffenheim the three points (92′). Bremen captain Marco Friedl and Hoffenheim’s Florian Grillitsch were already substituted at this point. Newly promoted Darmstadt 98 won 2-1 at FC Augsburg with Christoph Klarer and substitute Mathias Honsak. Emir Karic was missing due to a torn muscle fiber.
