The 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival begins on Wednesday at the Venice Lido. To begin with, the legendary Italian director Liliana Cavani will be honored with a Golden Lion for her life’s work. This is followed by a competition for this year’s trophies, which will be decided on September 9th. New works by Sofia Coppola (“Priscilla”), David Fincher (“The Killer”) and Ryusuke Hamaguchi (“Aku wa sonzai shinai”) are up for grabs.

With the co-production “The Theory of Everything” by Timm Kröger, Austria can hope to be able to participate in an award. However, there is little hope of a large concentration of stars at the festival, as many US stars will boycott the Lido this year due to the strikes in the dream factory that have been going on for weeks. Despite the premiere of her film “Poor Things”, Emma Stone is not expected by cult director Yorgos Lanthimos, nor is Bradley Cooper, who introduces his “Maestro” about Leonard Bernstein.
