The bioengineer Gastón Benavidez, a specialist in Radiotherapy Physics, praised the Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Center of Formosa as one of the most modern in the country and “unique in the region.”

In testimony collected by AGENFOR, He stressed that “we have already completed one year of care for the first patient. We have more than 350 admitted and more than 240 completed their treatment.

As he recounted, “what they say when they finish it is that they were able to follow it accompanied by their families and in the province, they did not have to move to other places with all that that means.”

“In the framework of equality that is carried out in Formosa, we have patients treated with and without social work, therefore accessibility is for all Formosa men and women and now we are beginning to incorporate patients from the region,” he emphasized.

In this sense, he stressed that “a Center with these characteristics is unique because of its size and also the technology used there,” which makes it one of the most modern in the country.

In the same way, regarding “the techniques that we implemented we also grew, going from the most basic to the most current, which are at the forefront of radiotherapy such as SRT and radiosurgery that we are going to apply soon.”

constant accompaniment

Asked about treatment with radiotherapy, he explained that there is always an initial fear on the part of the patient: “Perhaps due to their own ignorance, which is fine because they don’t have to know, they think that radiation causes pain. That is not the case, and we also have a well-being and quality of life module made up of nutritionists and psychologists who accompany the entire process”.

And he stressed that constant accompaniment covers not only the patient, but also the whole family. “Containment of the entire family group is very important,” she stressed.

The standard treatment is more or less between a month and a half, that is, about five weeks, he specified. “The patient must attend the Center from Monday to Friday,” he continued. When it’s his turn, he enters the bunker where the linear accelerator that generates the lightning is located. In five minutes he finishes the treatment and can go home. He is fully ambulatory and can lead a normal life.”

Human Resources

In turn, Benavidez commented that “we did the specialty in the City of Buenos Aires with a group of colleagues who started this project in 2015.”

He pointed out that “90% of the people who work in the Center are from Formosa. We have an interdisciplinary group in the clinical area where we are in patient care, such as radiotherapists, physicists, technicians, nurses and secretaries, while on the other hand there is the administration and support area with the accounting, legal and computer part, the which make up the overall work of the institution”.

Lastly, he stressed that “we are proud of the human group that was formed and of the care we provide to the patient. And also satisfaction. Looking back and seeing today is very comforting. We are a team in formation that with effort and as we have been doing things we are heading in the right direction”.
