The news has been in the news since March 22, 2024: Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has cancer. A rare announcement from the British royal family, who usually keep quiet about their health problems. We currently do not know much more about the illness from which the wife of the heir to the British throne William suffers, and speculation is rife, with some suggesting a tumor in the abdomen. In any case, it seems that the cancer was detected at an early stage, since Kate Middleton is currently undergoing preventive chemotherapy.
“We will not share any other private medical information”, said a spokesperson for the royal family on this subject. However, we know that “the princess is now on the mend after starting preventive chemotherapy”, which began at the end of February 2024.
This is not the first time that the member of the British royal family has had significant health concerns. Kate Middleton indeed has a scar of almost 8 cm on the left side of her head, result of a surgical operation. For the moment, Buckingham Palace has not given any further information on the subject, even if sources close to the royal family indicated that the operation had been important.
We further know that the Princess of Wales suffered from quite debilitating morning sickness – we speak of hyperemesis gravidarum, or pregnancy vomiting – when she was pregnant with Prince George, her first child, in 2012. For this reason, she was admitted to a private hospital at the time. Also during her second pregnancy in 2014 (of Princess Charlotte), Kate Middleton was subject to pregnancy vomiting. It was the same, finally, when she was pregnant with her third child, Prince Louis, in 2018.
Severe vomiting during pregnancy
“Hyperemesis gravidarum, or pregnancy vomiting, refers to extremely severe nausea and excessive vomiting during pregnancy. Unlike women who experience ordinary morning sickness, those with hyperemesis gravidarum lose weight and are dehydrated, explains the MSD Medical Manual.
“You have more severe vomiting which defines hyperemesis gravidarum if you have lost 5% of your weight or more, you are dehydrated (thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, etc.) and your PUQE score is greater than or equal to 7 ”, specifies Health Insurance.
A major abdominal operation
Finally, an abdominal operation hit the headlines last January : the Princess of Wales spent two weeks in hospital, without knowing the nature of the surgical operation. Three months of recovery followed, without Kate Middleton making a public appearance, leading to much speculation – even conspiracy theories – about her state of health. Kate Middleton finally came out of silence on March 22, 2024 to announce that she was at an early stage of cancer, without specifying its nature. The disease was discovered following his abdominal surgery.
