Chris Tapia, a Staten Island resident, was arrested on suspicion of attempting to assault a woman who was riding the New York Subway.
Tapia, 23, allegedly sat next to a 24-year-old female passenger and then she took off her pants and underwear on November 17 at around 11:25 p.m. in a line 4 car traveling north on the Lower Manhattan. Then he got on the woman, put his hands on her body and tried to pull down her skirtaccording to the New York police.
The victim was able to fight off the assailant and flee to another wagon. Meanwhile, his attacker ran off the train at Bowling Green Station and then boarded a ferry to Staten Island, he reported. New York Post.
The suspect was arrested a week later, on Thursday the 24th, on charges of attempted rape, sexual abuse, forcible touching and public lewdness, the New York police reported.
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
In a similar case, in September a man who offered to help a tourist through the complex system of the New York Subway he took her to the end of the Port Authority station platform in Manhattan and raped her, reported NYPD.
Violence does not rest on public transportation in New York. This year, public officials have repeatedly promised to increase police presence on Metro platforms and carriages as part of the former NYPD mayor Eric Adams’ security plan, that seeks to reduce violence by taking strong measures, including combat of indigence: last February it was determined that 350 people were “living” in the underground.
Despite the announced efforts, overall serious crime on subways is up 42% year-to-date compared to the same period in 2021, y the number of homicides this year already exceeds the eight registered last year.
