One of the oldest buildings in the Danish capital. Flames threaten art collection

Several paintings have been rescued from the burning building of the historic stock exchange in Copenhagen. Television footage on Tuesday morning showed people carrying away historical paintings, among other things. The Old Stock Exchange houses a large art collection, including the work “From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange” by PS Kroyerwhich was carried away by several people during the fire.

The spire of the building collapsed due to the fire. Several streets and the area around the building are cordoned off, as the police announced on X. Heavy smoke and high flames could be seen from the building. Copenhagen police expect the area to remain cordoned off for a long period of time. Due to massive traffic problems, it is recommended to only leave the city center if necessary. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.

The building was completed in 1625 with a church tower and is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen. It is currently being restored and is therefore scaffolded. The restoration is intended to correct an improper renovation of the building in the 19th century and restore the facade to its original appearance.
