HOLIDAY ADVICE: 15 dont’s in the restaurant – Martina Berg

The long holidays and vacation time are just around the corner. The hotels are well prepared and are hoping for numerous guests who will feel really comfortable during their stay. “Almost like home” is the slogan of many hotels. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should behave like you do at home when it comes to etiquette. Embarrassing situations are often observed, especially in hotel restaurants.

On my travels, I often find that the most common rules of conduct in restaurants are either unknown to many or have become completely irrelevant. What kind of light does that shed on the guest?

Much of what I have experienced and seen in the last few months I have summarized as the absolute don’ts for a visit to a restaurant. Mind you, these are all situations experienced in upscale hotel restaurants.

By the way, a etiquette tip:

Just because everyone is doing it wrong doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do!

Die 15 Dont’s im Restaurant

Place the bread, which is often served at the beginning, on the napkin instead of using the plate provided. The decorated serviette is seen as a table decoration and pushed aside. After the meal, the cloth napkin is crumpled up and thrown on the table like a piece of paper. Especially with buffet offers, the plates are overflowing with different dishes. The knife is never licked. The elbows on the table do not support the head. Do not throw the ice cubes from the wine cooler into the wine glass. Napkins are used neither as a sweat towel nor as a bib. The cutlery language should be mastered at any age. Cutlery criss-crossing the plate and the table is simply not appropriate. Get new food with the used dishes or cups. A new course means a new plate! The used dishes are not handed to the service staff. Fill your bags with various foods and take sandwiches from the buffet with you. Glasses are held by the stem and not by the belly. Enter the restaurant in flip-flops or bathing outfit. Left the place in the restaurant unclean and in a shambles.

Don’t believe it, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I could add a few more things to the list of “impossibilities in the restaurant” I have experienced. Isn’t it absurd that one still believes that one can behave in the bar like at home? Strange and incomprehensible to me.

“Etiquette, who needs something like that?” I often get as an answer when I mention in a conversation that I am an etiquette trainer. These are the very people who view some of the don’ts above as normal manners.

“If you want to measure a person’s education,
just watch him eat.”

This is exactly why job interviews are often held in restaurants. Applicants often believe that they have already been hired just because they are invited to dinner. Not even close! The future employer would like to get an idea of how the prospective employee knows how to behave at the table and towards the service staff.

What don’ts have you noticed in the restaurant?

Take care of me – and have a stylish next visit to the restaurant!
sincerely
Your
