What actually drives… Johnny Depp?
This car collection is ready for Hollywood
Today, Hollywood star Johnny Depp is showing at the Montreux Jazz Festival that he can shine not only in front of the camera, but also behind the guitar. But Depp doesn’t play soft tones at the wheel of his many luxury cars either.
Hollywood star Johnny Depp (59) recently made a name for himself behind the screen: the mud fight with ex-wife Amber Heard (36) made the headlines for weeks – Blick reported on the process of the year. Despite all the scandals, the gifted actor, who became even more famous as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” blockbusters, has many talents. He provides one of them on July 15th at the Montreux Jazz Festivalwhen he stands on stage next to musician Jeff Beck (77) in the Stravinski Auditorium and heats up the audience on the electric guitar.
Quiet tones just don’t suit Johnny Depp. Privately he is considered to be rather shy, but in front of the camera or on stage it’s allowed to crack – and in the car: Depp is said to own a huge car collection with around 45 luxury bodies – from super sports cars to fat SUVs to real classics.
A Corvette as a gift
One of the classics is a red 1959 Chevrolet Corvette that Depp drove in the 2011 film The Rum Diary, a prequel to the cult film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The film in which Amber Heard landed the female lead opposite Depp, leading to the short but tumultuous marriage. After the shooting, Depp is said to have received the “Vette” from film producer Graham King (60) as a gift. Instead of steel, the body is made entirely of plastic, which means that the 1,300-kilo American car can reach top speeds of over 200 km/h.
Thick ships and rarities
However, Johnny Depp’s first car is said not to have been a US icon: The 1969 Chevrolet Nova was more bread and butter than caviar. In part, Depp is said to have even lived in it because he couldn’t afford Hollywood rents. It is not known whether Depp, who now has a nine-figure US dollar fortune, still has Nova. It is known that Depp can call himself the proud owner of a true US heavyweight: the recently renewed Lincoln Navigator is one of the largest SUV models ever. The thick ship (length 5.66 m) equipped with a lot of luxury is powered by a twin-charged 3.5-liter V6 with around 450 hp, but costs from a relatively low 88,600 US dollars.
One of the rare sports models from German production that Depp has should not be so cheap. The limited Porsche 911 of the G series from 1980 once cost around 40,000 US dollars – Depp is likely to have paid a multiple of the original price for the three-liter suction engine with its 204 hp.
McGregor on Depp’s footsteps
Depp has other Europeans in the garage: several Rolls-Royce, for example, which also appear in the 2015 crook comedy “Mortdecai”. For one thing, he should Luxus-Coupé Wraith with a powerful V12 engine and 624 hp for over 330,000 US dollars, on the other hand a 1960 Silver Cloud, which also has an appearance in “Mortdecai”. Apparently, fellow actor Ewan McGregor (51) was so impressed by the elegant Rolls that he immediately got himself a Silver Cloud after filming, which he still uses to pick up his children from school, according to industry talk.
Super sports cars are also part of Johnny Depp’s car booty scheme: He is said to have treated himself to a Ferrari 308 GTS from 1975 from the first big fee. After a crash while shooting the horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984, he kept the repaired Ferrari until 1994, sold it – and bought it back two years later. Until he lent it to Nicolas Cage (58), who in turn had an accident with it. Depp replaced the 308 GTS with an identical model that he is said to drive to this day. Also in the fleet: a modern one Ferrari 488 Spiderwhich gets 670 hp from its V8 mid-engine and sprints to 100 km/h in three seconds.
Will Johnny Depp go full throttle on the stage in Montreux VD on July 15? We strongly assume that the US actor has never been on the road with the handbrake on, he is in the fast lane.
