Due to the increasing spread of the Asian tiger mosquito in Germany, there is also a risk of being infected with a tropical disease such as West Nile fever. According to a report by RTL an avoidably harmless mosquito bite resulted in a woman losing 85 percent of her thigh.

The mother of three wanted to spend a relaxing day at the lake with her children and parents when she suddenly noticed a mosquito bite on her thigh. It is not known what kind of mosquito it was. A short time later, blood poisoning occurs, also known as sepsis, and the 38-year-old has to go to the hospital. Doctors there diagnosed kidney failure. After RTL report she fell into a coma and had to be operated on twelve times.

However, the symptoms can be very different and vary per patient. The signs are often confused with other diseases. According to the Sepsis Foundation, many people suffer from the long-term consequences of possible amputations, paralysis or deafness. But also due to severe tiredness and chronic exhaustion, as well as poor memory and concentration. This is also the case for the 38-year-old, who wants to use her example to show others how much can happen when a mosquito bites.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, Social Affairs, Care and Consumer Protection, flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headaches and body aches can also occur after infection with a tropical disease caused by the tiger mosquito. This mosquito species can transmit up to 20 different viruses, including West Nile, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses. Depending on the severity of the course of the disease, some of these infections can also be fatal.

If symptoms occur after a mosquito bite that go beyond local symptoms such as itching, redness or swelling at the bite site, you should contact a doctor immediately. The tiger mosquito can also multiply in winter and adapt to the temperatures, so caution is also required in the cold season. (mima)
