Homophobia and Harassment: The Frédéric Janssens Affair in the Walloon Parliament

2023-12-20 18:48:00

Frédéric Janssens had not yet publicly discussed the problems linked to his homosexuality since the start of his troubles. In the document sent to the Parliament’s appeals committee which is due to speak in the coming weeks, he only mentions this question once. The suspended clerk – supported in this by his lawyers – now goes further and delivers some anecdotes that are intriguing.

”I am homosexual. Luckily, I never had to suffer psychologically. At school and in the professional world, it’s another matter,” he explains. His lawyers say they are convinced that there is “an element of homophobia” in the events that occurred in the Walloon Parliament, in connection with the accusations of harassment to which he is the subject – however, they will have to prove it .

Frédéric Janssens reveals a certain number of anecdotes which illustrate his suspicions. “One day when I pointed out to him that he had to be careful with speeding, a driver told me that he was not a pedal madman,” he explains. He still mentions this agent declaring to a colleague during an end-of-year reception and pointing out: “It is better to walk behind this one than in front”.

Court clerk affair: restaurant fees and tips which are surprising in a context where homophobia was not absent

Prostate problem

But that’s not all. “Another time, after throwing a chair in my face, an officer called me a dirty faggot. The president at the time (Emily Hoyos, Editor’s note) who witnessed the scene requested that disciplinary action be taken against her. Frédéric Janssens further explains that a “bailiff said one day, in the corridors of Parliament, that I was late because I had prostate problems, implying that it was due to my homosexuality”.

Finally, the suspended clerk relates a story which this time concerns a member of parliament. “We were at MIPIM in Cannes (Editor’s note: an international trade fair dedicated to real estate), on March 17, 2016 around 2 p.m. I was to join the Parliament delegation at the restaurant. Arriving at the table, I sit next to a socialist deputy. In front of me, there is a deputy MR. When I get up to go pay the bill, I hear MP MR asking his socialist colleague if he gets along well with me. The other answering in the affirmative, he then asks him if he is queer.”

Facts which cannot justify acts of harassment against agents – it will be up to the courts to rule – but which give an overview of the general atmosphere which reigned in the Walloon Parliament.
