After almost seven years of negotiations with the Honduran health authorities to gain access to the Honduran market, four production companies in the dairy sector in Guatemala were authorized to export their products to the neighboring country.

The measure was achieved following a series of consultations and agreements between the ministries of Economy, Health and Agriculture, within the framework of the Trade Dispute Settlement Mechanism between Central America.

The benefited companies are Amerador SA (Trebolac), Disar SA Planta el Tejar (Sarita), Helados de Centroamérica SA (Dos Pinos) and Productos Lácteos de Centroamérica SA (LALA).

These were authorized for a period of three years, in accordance with the provisions of the Central American Regulation on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and Procedures, Mineco reported.

Since 2018, Honduras had prevented imports of dairy products produced in Guatemala due to a commitment made by the majority of Central American countries that the plants that produced for export must be inspected and certified by the authorities of the destination country.

Now, with the authorization of the aforementioned plants, Guatemalan dairy products can be freely purchased by Honduran consumers.
