At the meeting, held at the headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Arévalo expressed his concern about the current suspension of the COG and his hope that the situation be resolved as soon as possible.

The objective of the Guatemalan president is that athletes can represent the country and participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, under its national flag.

The IOC president confirmed that he is absolutely willing to work to restore the suspended COG as soon as possible, which would pave the way for athletes to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games under their usual flag and protocol.

The sports authorities made it clear that the country’s suspension is lifted “it is necessary that the authorities comply with the aspects stipulated in the Olympic Charter”, that is, that the statutes are respected, which are currently still suspended by the Constitutional Court (CC).

The National Olympic Committee is currently headed by the group of former soccer player Jorge Rodas, who has not been recognized by the IOC.

The IOC requires that the suspension of its statutes be lifted and that the COG Assembly be restored, and this possession of Gerardo Aguirre, in order to lift the sanction. After the 2024 Paris Olympics, new elections would be called with a “clean table.”

Subsequently, both leaders held a meeting in which they addressed the situation of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Guatemala, and also talked about the history of sport and its importance in society.

Arévalo also took a tour of the Olympic Museum, where he was accompanied by the Honorary Member in Guatemala, Willi Kaltschmitt Luján. The activity included a video of Guatemala’s participation in the Olympic Games and the parades at the inaugurations with the Blue and White flag.
