The World Health Organization (WHO) has decided to honor, Sunday, May 20, the Belgian doctor and microbiologist Peter Piot for “his lifelong commitment to health”, indicated the UN institution in a communiqué. Peter Piot co-discovered the Ebola virus and is also a pioneer in AIDS research. In its statement, the WHO also underlines the “extraordinary leadership in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic” demonstrated by Professor Piot, as well as “the essential role he played in the creation of the UNAIDS agency, which coordinates programs to fight AIDS around the world. “In this time of multiple emergencies, health crises and conflicts, we recognize that leadership in public health and science is more important than ever to advance global health,” said the WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
