At the elite tournament in Ostrava (CZE), the beach volleyball duo Julian Hörl/Alexander Horst had to say goodbye after the first qualifying round. What bothers them is the absurdity of the current tournament system.
The two Austrians were beaten by the Italians Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava 16:21 and 18:21. The game was open for a long time in both sets, Hörl/Horst missed a number of break chances. Alexander Horst said: “You can never be satisfied after a defeat. We played against number 12 in the world, so everything has to fit. We created enough break chances and then weren’t able to take control of the game. “
Julian Hörl from Saalfelden explained: “We played well, the Italians were better – it’s as simple as that. We’ll probably win with this performance against the majority of the qualifying participants and we should take the positive feedback from the coaches with us and attack again next time .”
What annoys the two more and criticized them in advance: the tournament system currently means that even very strong teams have to compete in the qualification. In terms of Olympic qualification, it would be even wiser to play in the smaller Challenger tournaments. Alexander Horst explains: “The world ranking system and the extremely regulated access to the events currently do not create a fair and good image of our sport. You are currently being penalized for playing.” Some teams would not have played at all this year and would thus ensure a distorted current ranking.
Also at the next tournament, at the Challenge Event in Jurmala from 15.-18. Hörl / Horst have to qualify in June.
