Horseracing Wrongs Reports Horseshoe and Keeneland Horse Fatalities

Twenty-one horses were scratched by the regulatory veterinarian at Horseshoe in October because their handlers intended to race them while injured or unsound, Horseracing Wrongs reported.

The Toll at Horseshoe and Keeneland

The October figures from Horseshoe catalog four confirmed track kills—Favorite Lady 123, Solo Venturi, Dark Rye, and Speightsy Rival—alongside seven horses vanned off the track. Another five animals were scratched by private veterinarians for injury or illness. The starting gate and paddock also proved hazardous. Stewards noted that Temple Paynter and True Silver J P flipped in the paddock and were scratched. Tiz Bayou, Hf Arkansas Dave, and Hurricane Beach all flipped in the starting gate. Eyes On Andy was scratched at the gate lame.

A multi-horse spill on October 6 added further damage. After review, stewards determined that Clear the Beach clipped heels with Oh Please, triggering a chain-reaction spill that involved the 4-year-old horse. During the same period, jockey Martin Munoz received an excessive whip violation for striking Nachor Secret 17 times from the sixteenth pole to the wire, though the report notes it could have been seven lashes. Nachor finished third, earning $8,240.

At Keeneland, over a span of five days from October 18 to 24, the regulatory vet scratched eight horses intended for racing due to injury or unsoundness. Private vets scratched another 14. Seven horses bought through claims prior to races were returned to their sellers because they finished the events physically compromised. Stewards logged further incidents: Wild Acclaim clipped heels, fell, and did not finish; Sagamore and First of His Name returned lame and required the ambulance; Don’t Fire Joe suffered physical distress and was pulled up; Livvo returned lame and required an ambulance; Hathaway was injured in the starting gate and scratched; and No Bien Ni Mal finished seventh and bled.
