The town of Hossegor, in the Landes, is famous for its vast beaches and its typical houses of the region. Over the decades, it has also become an important place for surfing enthusiasts.
Behind the legendary beach of Soorts-Hossegor (Landes), there are houses typical of the Landes coast. Here, the first buildings of this type were built just 100 years ago. “These are typical examples, with this architecture which is very specific”, explains Christophe Vignaud, mayor (various right) of the town. Many of them were designed by “well-known architects of the time, who settled in and emerged from bourgeois houses”.
Surfing, at the heart of the culture of the city’s economy
From then on, urbanization continued, while striving to preserve natural areas and turning towards the ocean. This corner of paradise quickly attracted tourists, then distinguished itself thanks to the advent of a sport from the Pacific: surfing. Over the years, the spots of Hossegor have proven to be essential for amateur and professional surfers alike. The boardsports industry is becoming a flourishing economy. But a victim of its own success, the town went from 4,000 inhabitants in winter to 50,000 in summer.
