Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas, is facing a preliminary review by the House Committee on Ethics regarding finance-related allegations, an inquiry the lawmaker has dismissed as baseless. The House of Representatives’ internal watchdog announced the ongoing examination on Monday afternoon, noting that the panel is extending its review of a matter initially reported by the Office of Congressional Conduct on June 10, 2026.
The House Committee on Ethics stated that it will determine its next course of action regarding the matter on or before November 9. The announcement marks a procedural step before the bipartisan panel decides whether to escalate the preliminary inquiry into a formal investigation led by an investigatory subcommittee.
In a statement issued to Fox News Digital, Gooden denied any culpability and criticized the origins of the review. “These are bogus spending allegations perpetrated by dishonest unelected OCC bureaucrats, and as the fifth Texas GOP ally of the president to endure one of these attacks, I am confident the House Ethics Committee will confirm their baseless nature,” Gooden said.

The Office of Congressional Conduct operates as an independent, nonpartisan entity tasked with reviewing allegations of misconduct levied against House lawmakers, officers, and staff members. Staff and board members within the OCC examine incoming complaints before determining whether to formally refer them to the House Committee on Ethics for further action.
According to its public disclosures, the oversight body handles a wide variety of potential infractions. Its jurisdiction covers topics including congressional earmarks, official travel, financial disclosure reports, and the administration of legal expense funds.
Under House rules, Monday’s public notice signals that the Ethics Committee has chosen to extend its initial review period rather than dismiss the matter or immediately launch a full-scale investigation. The panel faces a self-imposed deadline of November 9 to announce whether the inquiry will be closed or advanced to the next investigative tier.
