Houston Astros’ Framber Valdez Injury Update: Sore Right Ankle Sidelines Ace Pitcher

2023-07-02 14:53:37

Framber Valdez was scheduled to start Sunday, but the Astros will skip his turn in the rotation with what the team has called a sore right ankle.

Houston manager Dusty Baker said Valdez “twisted his ankle” in his outing against the Mets on June 20 and that his movement to the plate was affected — he left high pitches in the zone — in its outing in St. Louis on Tuesday. In that game, Valdez gave up four runs and eight hits while walking three in six innings.

“We decided to skip (his turn) this time, and hopefully he’ll pitch again before the (All-Star break),” Baker said.

Valdez has emerged as an ace this season. In 16 starts, he has posted a 2.46 ERA, the best in the American League so far this season, while striking out 110 batters in 105.0 innings of work.
