For a few days, The newspaper will present you with portraits of young people who are about to embark on life. Inflation, housing crisis, debt: many young Quebecers are worried about their future.

A young 21-year-old nurse manages to put 60% of her pay aside for three years by leading a more modest lifestyle in order to be able to buy her first house and to marry her spouse.

“I read the collective agreement from A to Z to understand it. I studied it. I asked questions to do what made the most financial sense,” explains Marie-Anne Bonneau, a young nurse from the South Shore of Montreal in her early twenties.

“Instead of working full time, I opted for part time with double time and $200 bonuses. I make a very good living,” she continues.

Thanks to her iron discipline, Marie-Anne Bonneau is in the process of achieving a real tour de force: accumulating enough money to get started in life.

“I’m putting 60% of my pay aside to buy myself a $700,000 house,” she sums up.

Vieille minoune

His secret? No question of affording a luxurious apartment or a new car, even if she can afford it.

Her current rent costs her barely 10% of her salary and she is satisfied with an old minoune bought for $3,500 three years ago with her own money.

“I calculated that I need to save $280 a week to get my 20% down payment, which is very realistic. I go to university full time, and I get there, ”illustrates the young woman in her business.

Her boyfriend, an apprentice electrician, also has a good paycheque. He pursues the same dream as her by raising as much money as possible.

“It’s really the overtime that allows me to accumulate extraordinary sums so quickly. You have to know the system to be able to save,” insists Marie-Anne Bonneau, who has read extensively on personal finance.

Financial advisor, portfolio manager, accountant… she surrounded herself with a team to help her achieve her goals. And it bears fruit.

«Appearance society»

While young people often struggle to make ends meet, Marie-Anne Bonneau believes that too many people live beyond their means.

This is what prompted her to contact The newspaper reading our file on the finances of the younger generation: she wanted to share her experience to show that there is a way to get rich when you are determined.

To get there, you can’t have it all, she says. We have to mourn what is valued in the consumer society.

“Society values money and looks. People have to look at my car, and be like, ‘Ayoye,’ but that’s exactly what it looks like,” she said.

“I have nothing on credit. Everything belongs to me. I only have my rent and Hydro-Quebec to pay. That’s all. This is financial freedom. People don’t know that anymore, and it’s sad,” she adds.

Au On dutyl, she confides that when she worked at Tim Hortons, younger, she walked a good hour to work and back, which brought her enough money to go to an apartment at the age of 18 with her husband.

“I accumulated money. I did not once receive any money from my parents. I managed,” she concludes.
