How Bedroom Temperature Impacts Sleep Quality for Older Adults: Insights from a Harvard Study

The study, conducted by researchers at the Marcus Institute for Research on Aging and Harvard Medical School, found that older people are more vulnerable to sleep deprivation than younger people, and that the temperature in their bedrooms plays a significant role in the quality and efficiency of their sleep.

The study involved monitoring 50 elderly participants for more than 11,000 nights, collecting data on the duration and quality of their sleep, as well as information on the temperature in their bedrooms using special sensors.

The results showed that older adults experienced the most efficient and restful sleep at ambient temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Increasing the temperature to 30°C resulted in a clinically significant decrease in sleep efficiency by 5-10%. Scientists noted that differences between participants allow the optimal temperature range to be considered with some margin of 5 °C, Science of the Total Environment reports.

These results indicate the importance of regulating bedroom temperature to improve sleep quality in older adults. With climate change likely to bring higher temperatures even in cities such as Moscow, which experience “tropical nights” with temperatures of at least 20°C, these findings are particularly relevant to the health of millions of people, especially the elderly.
